On the day of your appointment please bring your paper blood form. Please do not arrive any earlier than 5 minutes before your appointment slot. Following national guidance, patients visiting one of our community sites are now required to wear a face mask- please ensure that you bring one to wear.

If you are not fasting for your blood test, it may be advisable to arrive after noon for your test when wait times are generally shorter

When your GP arranges for you to have a blood test the result will usually come back about 7-10 days later. If any of the results are abnormal then the doctor will send you a text message or telephone asking you to make an appointment.

Please do not worry if you receive this message. The doctor will say if you need to be seen urgently.

If your results are normal you will not routinely receive a text or letter.

After 7 days you are welcome to call reception after 11:00 on 02085999951 to confirm that your results are normal if you wish, or use patient access.

X-ray and scan reports can take longer than this to come back to your GP. As with blood tests, if there is anything which your doctor wishes to discuss with you they will send you a message. To obtain your results for these investigations please contact the surgery after 14 days.

Tests which are arranged by hospital consultants do not come automatically back to your GP until after you have seen the hospital doctor and been given the result personally.

CHILDREN

General pathology are not able to bleed any children under 3 years old in either blood test areas at Queen’s or King George Hospitals. For children under 3, please telephone Children’s OPD at Queen’s Hospital on 01708435289 to make appointments.

Tests requiring patients to fast overnight

If you have been asked to fast overnight, unless specifically directed otherwise, the fasting period should be from 10pm until after the blood has been taken. During the fasting period only water and normal medication should be taken as directed.

Labelling your own specimen containers
